Woman with full lips

If you’re considering lip injections in the Syracuse or Albany, NY, area or elsewhere, you probably have a few questions about what to expect. While the lip augmentation process is fairly quick and simple, there are a few things to consider when it comes to products, costs, and aftercare.

In this blog post, I’d like to answer a few of the lip injection questions Dr. Hargrave and I are asked most often here at our plastic surgery practice.

Which lip filler should I choose?

The most popular fillers for lip augmentation are JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, which are made of hyaluronic acid, and RADIESSE®, which uses synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres to encourage collagen production.

Each product offers unique benefits. Visiting our office for an in-person consultation is the best way to determine the right filler for you. During your consultation, Dr. Hargrave or I will examine your face carefully and make personalized recommendations according to your anatomy and goals.

Who performs lip injections?

At the Plastic Surgery Group, board-certified plastic surgeons administer all injections in our clinic near Syracuse, NY. Other practices may have nurse injectors or physician assistants perform injections of dermal fillers or other products such as BOTOX® Cosmetic.

How much do lip injections cost?

The cost of lip injections varies based on the product and the volume injected. When you visit us for a consultation, you’ll receive a personalized quote based on your unique treatment plan.

While it may be tempting to turn to less qualified providers who offer significantly lower than average prices, this is one deal that isn’t worth taking. No amount of savings is worth risking your safety or results. When it comes to medical procedures such as lip injections, it’s always best to trust a credentialed professional.

How long do lip injections last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as JUVÉDERM typically last from 3 months to more than a year before the body naturally dissolves them. RADIESSE’s collagen-stimulating effect can last for several months and sometimes more than a year.

Unlike other fillers, hyaluronic acid formulations can be dissolved at any time if needed. An injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase breaks the gel down within 48 hours. Learn more about filler removal in our previous blog post.

How can I reduce swelling after lip injections?

Gently applying ice and avoiding strenuous exercise for the rest of the day will keep your swelling down after lip injections.

Some people also worry about bleeding or bruising afterward, but you can make this less likely by taking a few measures before your appointment. Avoiding alcohol and blood-thinning painkillers like ibuprofen for 24 to 48 hours ahead of time will reduce your risk of bleeding or bruising.
